ADMIRALTY AND MARITIME LAW:
A PATHFINDER TO RESOURCES IN OR AVAILABLE THROUGH
THE MUSE LAW LIBRARY

INTRODUCTION AND TABLE OF CONTENTS

Scope: This pathfinder provides a broad overview of key resources available within or through the Muse Law Library of the University of Richmond. It is not meant to be comprehensive, but only to suggest the most logical starting points for investigations into admiralty and maritime law.

Since the field of admiralty and maritime law is intertwined with many other areas of the law, a list of all conceivable search strategies is beyond the scope of this research tool. Users are reminded to analyze their facts from all significant legal perspectives, utilizing terms from maritime law and admiralty to subdivide or refine their searches as appropriate. One should note that what is known as the "Law of the Sea" or "Oceans Law" is a distinct legal genre only marginally dealt with in this pathfinder.

Superseded and other non-current materials have not been included in this guide.

For a more extensive online bibliography, consult "Admiralty/Maritime Law Resources," compiled by John R. Barden. This bibliography is arranged topically in 33 chapters, includes several hundred titles, and is periodically updated. It may be accessed through the Muse Law Library’s "Bibliographic Resources" page or directly at http://law.richmond.edu/library/pubs/admiralty/firstpage.htm.

The form of the listings in this pathfinder approximates library-style cataloging. It does not follow Bluebook format.

This pathfinder is arranged by the type of resource. Wherever feasible, the structure and subject coverage of the resource have been indicated. However, users are warned that they will likely have to consult resources from several—if not all—sections of this pathfinder in order to conduct a thorough search on any given maritime law or admiralty topic. The general breakdown of resources is as follows:

GENERAL REFERENCE/INTRODUCTORY RESOURCES

STATUTORY LAW

REGULATORY LAW

CASE LAW

TREATISES

JOURNALS

BIBLIOGRAPHY

INTERNET AND LEXIS/WESTLAW
